Short Story: A Letter to David

Below, my entry in the 100 word short story competition at the Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair. Poet Laureate Derek Walcott was in attendance. This entry earned me a special commendation!

A Letter to David

Beneath her soft lined cocoa skin, you, David, still grip her arthritic joints with fear.

As my mama looked up,her sad eyes, unbidden, watered as she recalled the sweat-stained dollars she had trustingly squeezed between sturdy galvanised and the walls.

Ah David! You had no care for her hopes and dreams those musty worn notes contained. Did you know, your gales eventually dumped them, mulched, into the littered Grand Bay sea?

And in that same water my mama, for weeks, had to bath, fume, retrieve and grieve.
