The Secret of Powerful Writing

I attended Dominica’s first Literary Festival and Book Fair 8-10 August. I really enjoyed the workshop run by Professor Morris. He explained that literature that works usually works through the senses – touch, hearing, smell, taste, seeing.

The exercises he gave us were illuminating and inspired a very sensuous poem of my own, triggered by a shopping trip in London in July. My friends shiver when I recite it. Where is this poem? Next posting!

I also submiited an entry into the short story competition. It had to be either on the theme of carnival or hurricane. It was won by Paul Crask (writer of Bradt’s excellent Dominica guide book. It was a clear winner. I got a commendation.  My entry ” A Letter to David” follows…
